Fun in Door County, WI

Hi,

We had a great time in Door County, WI. Door County is a 75 mile long peninsula surrounded by Lake Michigan on  the north and east and the bay of  Green Bay to the west. We stayed in a great campground, Bailey’s Grove in the small, quaint town of Bailey’s Harbor.

We learned that the popular “tourist” towns were on the bay side, Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Fish Creek,  and Sister Bay. They were fun to visit, and only about 10 miles away, but we enjoyed the scenery near us also. So many beautiful farms.

One day we went to Peninsula State Park. Mom and Dad climbed this tower 

to take a picture of Horseshoe Island. I stayed in the car as I am afraid of heights.

Dad went charter fishing for salmon one night and he caught three 18-20 lb salmon. 

 He had them flash frozen and luckily they fit in what room we had left in our freezer. I love salmon!!

One day  we went to some beautiful cliffs and  caves along Lake Michigan.

Mom thought I needed a bath ( without soap) so we waded into the clear lake. It was fun at first. 

  But all of a sudden I couldn't touch the bottom. I started paddling as fast as I could then grabbed mom's leg. I don't think I like swimming.

I'm sinking......

The last day Mom and Dad took the ferry and their bikes to Washington Island. Mom told me that she really didn’t  see anything on the island as she spent the entire time looking down at the road from her handlebars as Dad led them on a fast zoom around the island. So, no pictures of the island, just another of Dad's flowers with bugs.

Northwestern Wisconsin

Hi,

  Our first stop in Wisconsin was Bayfield, on the northern tip of Lake Superior.

This quaint fishing village is right out of a Currier and Ives print and we had a great time there.

Mom and Dad took a sailing trip around the Apostle Islands.

Dad even got to steer the boat. I was still under the weather, so I stayed on shore.

 

 One night they went to the local hangout, Maggie's for a traditional whitefish dinner

 Many thanks to those of you who emailed mom to express their concern for my heath. I finally had to go to a vet, who took lots of blood from me, boy did I scream! After lots of tests ( and $$$),  found out nothing was seriously wrong. But I did hear the vet tell mom that she had to stop feeding me my human nummies, and stick to the dog food - darn!! Then to top it off the vet talked them into having my teeth cleaned, no fun either, but boy do I have a beautiful smile!


Our next stop was in Eagle River, which lies along a chain of 28 lakes following the Eagle River, considered the longest interlinked chain of fresh water lakes in the world! Everywhere I looked there were lakes.

Dad went fishing on one of the lakes and caught about 14 large mouth bass. Luckily for the fish, he threw them back in the lake after he took their picture.

 

No, they aren't all the same ones!  He sure looks happy, doesn't he?

Still in Minnesota

Hi,  Can you spot me in the flowers?

How about now?

I have seen  so many beautiful wildflowers on our trip.

We are finishing up our stay in beautiful Minnesota, so thought I catch you up on what else we did. After Ely we drove to Grand Portage, at the northeast tip of MI, on Lake Superior, right next to the Canadian border of Ontario.

Our first stop was to the Grand Portage National Monument.

The Grand Portage was the 8 1/2 mile route that the Voyageurs  carried two 90 pound packs of furs, along with their canoes, between Lake Superior and Fort Charlotte to bypass a long stretch of waterfalls and rapids to get to northwest Canada.   

From 1784 to 1803 the Northwest Company ran the most profitable fur trade operation on the Great Lakes and their headquarters was in Grand Portage. They controlled 70% of the fur trade business, which is like controlling70% of the oil business today.  The national monument is a reconstruction of the headquarters.

The next day mom and dad left me in the RV and they took a boat to Isle Royale National Park, located on Lake Superior in Michigan. I am glad I didn't have to go on the boat because I haven't been feeling too well lately. My stomach has been bothering me and I have been having problems at both ends. Mom took my temperature, which wasn't too much fun because it didn't go in my mouth, if you know what I mean. But, I didn't have a temperature, so off they went.

It was a very foggy day so they didn't get to appreciate the sights along the way.  But it cleared up a bit when they arrived.

They took a hike in the heavily forested woods and listened to some ranger talks

and then headed back

 to me - I am now on a diet of rice and baby food - hope it works!

Our final stop in Minnesota was Duluth. We were able to park in a Marina close to the famous Aerial Lift Bridge - can you see it behind our RV?

Dad took me for a walk at night and we got these shots. Here it is when it's down.

Here is what it looks like in the daytime. Huge 1,000 foot freighters from around the world glide into the harbor beneath the giant silver bridge. It was quite a sight.

We also saw the "Tall Ships" pass under the bridge and have a battle in the harbor.

Mom and Dad ended the trip with a visit to Fitger's Brewhouse, a Duluth tradition since 1859. Dad liked their beer.
